The firm has an extensive practice in maritime litigation and transactions, including the defense of major barge lines, smaller marine operations and their insurers in Jones Act and general maritime law personal injury claims and property damage claims in federal and state courts, including proceedings under The Shipowner’s Limitation of Liability Act. On a transactional side, the firm routinely handles charters (bareboat and fully found), vessel purchases and sales, vessel documentation and financing, including First Preferred Ship Mortgages, and marine insurance issues in such transactions.
The maritime practice group is led by member C. Thomas Miller, who has over twenty-two years’ experience in federal and state court litigation. He represents maritime clients in numerous disputes including allisions, barge construction, maritime product liability, tow break-aways and Jones Act cases.
Nicholas Holland, also a member of the firm’s business and real estate groups, is well experienced in maritime law and leads the firm’s maritime transaction practice.
Sharlott Higdon, a member of the firm’s workers’ compensations group, defends employers in claims brought under the Longshore & Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act.
Maritime paralegal Connie DeRezza served as chief assistant to preeminent maritime practitioner E. Spivey Gault for over twenty years and is heavily involved in the firm’s maritime transactional and litigation practice.
